The Aesthetics Team facilitates careful stewardship of all that our home represents, by working in partnership with other congregational entities and individuals. We welcome and appreciate the congregation's feedback on our various projects.
Flags
What flags would you like us to fly at UUFCO?
We always fly the UUFCO flag, featuring the flaming chalice against a mountain skyline, to establish our identity and declare our loving, welcoming presence to the community. We also fly other flags that declare our commitment to enduring UU values, including equality, human dignity, human rights, and environmental protection. We choose flags that align with the Seven Principles of Unitarian Universalism.
We have long flown the conventional rainbow flag, the longtime standard of LGBTQ rights and inclusivity, to welcome people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. This flag, a contemporary hallmark of Unitarian Universalism, embodies the First Principle, the inherent worth and dignity of every person.
Beginning in 2018, we are flying an alternating third flag to frame other shared values and commitments. We do this to both strengthen and announce our communal commitments. We hope the practice will stimulate discussion within the Fellowship and the larger community.
In January 2018, we flew the "COEXIST" flag, which expresses the UU custom of seeking wisdom from all religious traditions. This stylized set of faith emblems expresses the Fourth UU Principle — a free and responsible search for truth and meaning.
Honoring the Seventh Principle, respect for the interdependent web of all existence, we flew the Earth Day flag in April. And in June we began flying Equal Rights (or Human Rights), an emerging standard that underscores our commitment to the First Principle, the inherent worth and dignity of every person.
Going forward, how shall we augment the UUFCO flag? Might we alternate the conventional rainbow flag with one of the various emerging alternatives that express new forms of cultural awakening? How shall we use the flagpole nearest the building? What flags would you like us to fly? Below are some of the flags available online. The Aesthetics Team welcomes input on these options, as well as suggestions for other flags. Go to Comments on Flags or leave your suggestions in the drop box at the kiosk.
